The short answer: the Dyson Supersonic costs about C$400–630 in Canada. The Laifen Air at about C$100 gets you the same core technology — a brushless high-speed motor with ionic heat control — for roughly a quarter of the price, and it is our top pick. For thick or long hair, step up to the Laifen SE2 (about C$145); if C$100 is out of reach, the Slopehill at about C$43 is the best-selling dryer in the category. But before you buy any of them, read the durability section: we analysed 8,261 Canadian hair dryer reviews across 98 models, and the biggest problem in this entire category is not power, noise or price. It is that they break.
Quick picks: the best Dyson hair dryer alternatives in Canada
| Pick | Model | Price (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall | Laifen Air | about C$100 | Most people. Closest thing to a Supersonic at 1/4 the price |
| Best for thick or long hair | Laifen SE2 | about C$145 | Dense hair that takes 20+ minutes to dry |
| Best build quality | Dreame High-Speed | about C$160 | Buyers who want the most premium feel under C$200 |
| Best budget dupe | Slopehill Professional Ionic | about C$43 | Under C$50, and the best-selling dryer in the category |
| Best lightweight | Wavytalk with Diffuser | about C$40 | Fine hair, travel, or a second dryer |

How we researched these Dyson hair dryer alternatives
This guide is built entirely from two sources: 8,261 verified Amazon.ca reviews, and current Amazon.ca listing data. We have not bench-tested these dryers ourselves, and we say so rather than dress up a spec sheet.
What we actually did. We pulled and analysed 8,261 Amazon.ca reviews covering 98 hair dryer models sold in Canada, spanning February 2015 to September 2026. 93.1% were verified purchases. We coded every review against 20 concern categories and split them by star rating — so we could see not just what people wrote about, but where they were unhappy. We then combined that with listings data: current price, rating, rating volume, estimated monthly unit sales, and who holds the Buy Box.
What we deliberately did not do. We did not copy a feature list from a product page and call it research. We did not repeat manufacturer claims as if they were verified facts. And we did not invent measurements. Where a number in this guide comes from a brand rather than from us, we label it.
How to read the labels in this guide
| Label | What it means | How much weight to give it |
|---|---|---|
| Review analysis | A pattern across all 8,261 reviews | Strong for trends, not for one unit |
| Amazon.ca data | Price, rating, rating count, seller structure, sales estimate | Verifiable — check it yourself today |
| Buyer feedback | A single quoted experience | Illustrative, not proof |
| Manufacturer claim | Stated by the brand, not verified by us | Treat as unverified |
A note on our own testing. Hands-on bench testing of these five models is on our roadmap, not in this guide. When it completes we will publish measured airflow, sound pressure and dry times on this page and date the change. We would rather tell you exactly what we have done than pad this page with numbers we did not measure. Our full method is on our methodology page.
One honest caveat about the review dataset. The reviews we sampled average 3.37 stars, while these same products display 4.3–4.6 stars on their Amazon pages. That gap tells us the export skews toward more recent (and more critical) reviews, or includes discontinued variants. So we use it for theme and pain-point analysis only — never as a stand-in for a product’s displayed rating. Where we quote a star rating in this guide, it is the figure shown on the Amazon.ca listing itself.
Why durability is the lens we rank on. In our dataset, “durability / it broke” was the single most negative topic in the entire category: 946 negative mentions and an 84% negative share — meaning when Canadians wrote about reliability, they were almost always complaining. No other topic came close for negativity. That is why the table below ranks on reliability signals, not just airflow.
1. Laifen Air — Best overall Dyson hair dryer alternative
about C$100 · 4.5★ (278 ratings) · Amazon.ca data, checked 2026-10-02
This is the pick for most people. Laifen is the brand that made “high-speed hair dryer” a mainstream category in Canada, and the Air is its newest and most popular model — it reached the #25 slot in the Hair Dryers category within about four months of launch.
What it does well
- Roughly a quarter of the Supersonic’s price for the same fundamental approach: a brushless high-speed motor moving high airflow at lower heat, rather than blasting hot air Manufacturer claim
- Ionic and frizz-control benefits are echoed in buyer feedback — reviewers consistently describe smoother, less frizzy results Review analysis
- The Canadian listing is fully brand-controlled: one seller, brand-operated, FBA fulfilled. No grey-market resellers, which matters a great deal for warranty claims Amazon.ca data
- Sits in the over-C$120-equivalent quality band — in our dataset, dryers above C$120 had a 9.6% complaint rate against 30.3% below C$50 Review analysis
What it does not do well
- Laifen is a young brand. Long-term reliability is unproven compared with brands that have a decade of Canadian service history. Treat this as an unquantified risk Review analysis
- The older Laifen Swift (gen 1) is a different model with a noticeably weaker 4.1★ rating and declining sales. We excluded it from this list — do not assume all Laifen models are equal Amazon.ca data
- Replacement attachments are harder to find in Canada than for legacy brands Review analysis
Reliability and seller snapshot — Buy Box: Laifen Official (1 seller) · Price band: mid-premium · Warranty: verify current terms on the listing · Common failure mode in this category: cord and switch failure

2. Laifen SE2 — Best Dyson alternative for thick or long hair
about C$145 · 4.5★ (189 ratings) · Amazon.ca data, checked 2026-10-02
The SE2 is the step-up model, and the data says it earns the extra C$44 if your hair is dense or long. Airflow and power were the most-discussed topic in our entire dataset (1,585 mentions), and the complaint pattern is revealing: reviewers rarely complain a dryer is too powerful — they complain it is too weak for their hair.
What it does well
- Built for the buyer who returns a dryer for being underpowered — the single most common reason reviewers describe returning one Review analysis
- Strongest growth signal of any Laifen model in the Canadian category, measured by month-over-month sales movement Amazon.ca data
- Same brand-controlled Canadian storefront and FBA fulfilment as the Air Amazon.ca data
- Reviewers of high-speed dryers in this price range commonly describe drying medium-length hair in the 3–6 minute range Buyer feedback
What it does not do well
- At about C$145 it is close to entry Dyson territory, so the value case is thinner than the Air’s Amazon.ca data
- Heavier than the Air — reviewers of step-up models frequently note the extra weight Review analysis
- At this price you may be paying for power you do not need if your hair is fine Review analysis

3. Dreame High-Speed — Best build quality under C$200
about C$160 · 4.6★ (252 ratings) · Amazon.ca data, checked 2026-10-02
Dreame is the other premium high-speed brand with a real Canadian presence, and in our dataset it holds the highest rating of any dryer above C$120 (4.6★). It is also among the least-discussed models — which tells you something: the people who buy it are not the people writing complaint reviews.
What it does well
- 4.6★ — the best rating in the premium tier of our dataset Amazon.ca data
- Buyer sentiment is dominated by build quality and quiet operation rather than complaints Review analysis
- Brand-operated Canadian listing with FBA fulfilment Amazon.ca data
What it does not do well
- Low volume (roughly 163 units/month). A small Canadian footprint means few long-term owners, so reliability data is thin and spare parts or service will be harder Amazon.ca data
- The highest price on this list after the SE2, for the fewest reviews Amazon.ca data

4. Slopehill Professional Ionic — Best budget Dyson dupe
about C$43 · 4.5★ (22,195 ratings) · Amazon.ca data, checked 2026-10-02
This is the best-selling dryer in the entire Canadian hair dryer category — roughly 8,660 units a month, more than Dyson and Laifen combined. If you want the model the most Canadians are actually buying, this is it. 22,195 ratings is not a rounding error.
What it does well
- The highest sales volume in the category, with over 22,000 ratings behind it — you are not gambling on an unknown Amazon.ca data
- Roughly one tenth of a Supersonic’s price Amazon.ca data
- Consistent feedback themes: lightweight, powerful for the money, good value Review analysis
What it does not do well
- The highest durability risk on this list. It sits in the under-C$50 band, and in our analysis that band had a 30.3% complaint rate versus 9.6% for dryers over C$120. Budget dryers break more — that is the pattern, and it is not brand-specific Review analysis
- The Buy Box is held by third parties, not the brand. We found three different sellers holding the Buy Box across Slopehill’s listings, with 2–5 competing offers per ASIN. Warranty service runs through a reseller, and that seller can change under you Amazon.ca data
Reliability and seller snapshot — Buy Box: third-party (Stellartech and others), 2–5 competing sellers · Price band: budget (highest complaint band) · Warranty: verify who honours it before buying

5. Wavytalk with Diffuser — Best lightweight Dyson alternative
about C$40 · 4.3★ (32,950 ratings) · Amazon.ca data, checked 2026-10-02
Wavytalk has the second-highest review count in the category (32,950), and “size / compact / light” was the most positively discussed topic in our entire dataset (1,429 mentions, 74% positive). If your priority is a dryer that does not tire out your arm and packs easily, this is the value pick.
What it does well
- 32,950 ratings at about C$40 — the most-reviewed dryer on this list Amazon.ca data
- Includes a diffuser, which matters for curly and wavy hair Amazon.ca data
- Lightweight and compact is its dominant praise theme Review analysis
What it does not do well
- 4.3★ is the lowest rating on this list — still solid, but the complaint pattern is real Amazon.ca data
- Same under-C$50 durability caveat as the Slopehill Review analysis
- “Attachments falling off” was a recurring complaint in our dataset (186 mentions total). Check the diffuser fit on arrival Review analysis

Three rows here appear in almost no other buying guide: complaint rate by price band, who holds the Buy Box, and the ALCI plug check. The first two come from our review analysis and listing data; the third is explained below. They are the three things most likely to actually cost you money.
Durability and warranty: the real problem with Dyson alternatives
The median reported failure across our dataset was just 5.5 months. This is the most important section of this guide. Our analysis of 8,261 Canadian reviews found that reliability is not just a concern in this category — it is the concern. Here is the data.
The failure timeline. 552 reviews named a specific month at which the dryer failed:
| Reported failure time | Number of reviews |
|---|---|
| 2 months | 70 |
| 3 months | 83 |
| 4 months | 58 |
| 5 months | 58 |
| 6 months | 109 |
| 7–9 months | 88 |
- Median reported failure: 5.5 months. Mean: 6.0 months.
- Only 0.8% failed out of the box. This is not a defective-batch problem — it is a “wears out fast” problem.
How they fail. Every failure review was coded to a failure mode:
| Failure mode | Mentions | Of which negative |
|---|---|---|
| Stopped working entirely | 601 | 539 |
| Cord / connector failure | 417 | 193 |
| Switch or button failure | 300 | 159 |
| Motor / airflow degradation | 196 | 83 |
| Smoking or catching fire | 182 | 175 |
| Heating element burnout | 71 | 63 |
| Plastic melting or deforming | 64 | 57 |
Cord failure is the one to watch. Reviewers repeatedly described the cord failing at the point where it enters the handle — in several cases with visible sparking. One reviewer described the cord sparking while drying her hair; another reported the unit “sparked and briefly caught fire” at the same junction. When you receive any dryer on this list, check that strain relief point first.
Price band changes the odds substantially. Splitting our dataset by the price of the model:
| Price band | Share of reviews | Average rating | Complaint rate (1–2★) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under C$50 | 3,259 | 3.39★ | 30.3% |
| C$50–120 | 887 | 3.52★ | 29.0% |
| Over C$120 | 334 | 4.43★ | 9.6% |
Dryers over C$120 had roughly one third the complaint rate of dryers under C$50. That is the strongest single argument for the Laifen Air and Dreame over the Slopehill and Wavytalk — and it is the opposite of what most “dupe” content tells you.
What this means for your decision:
- Buy the warranty, not the spec sheet. With a median 5.5-month failure time, the warranty length is the single most valuable number on the box
- Prefer a brand-controlled listing. Laifen and Dreame both sell through a single brand-operated seller in Canada. Slopehill’s Buy Box is held by third parties with up to five competing offers — if the seller changes, your warranty claim has no clear counterparty
- Keep your Amazon receipt. The “Amazon return window had closed” problem appeared repeatedly in the reviews

Dyson alternative safety: heat control, overheating and the Canadian ALCI plug
Heat and safety issues were the second-largest cluster of complaints in our dataset, and unlike durability they carry physical risk.
What the numbers show:
- 590 negative mentions on temperature and overheating (54% of all heat-related comments were negative)
- 182 mentions of smoking or catching fire — 96% of which were negative reviews. This is the single most reliably negative signal in the entire dataset
- 215 mentions of burning or plastic smell, 84% negative. A persistent burning smell is the most common precursor reviewers describe before a dryer dies
What reviewers actually reported:
- Dryers that “run too hot on high,” forcing users to constantly press the cool button
- Units where the heating coil burned out after a few months, preceded by a burning smell and a puff of smoke
- Exterior plastic melting and deforming from overheating, in one case causing a burn to the user’s hand
- A dryer that “sparked and briefly caught fire,” leaving a burn on the user’s wrist
The Canadian ALCI plug — the check nobody makes. ALCI (Appliance Leakage Circuit Interrupter) plugs are the North American shock-protection standard for hair dryers. One Canadian reviewer flagged a dryer sold on Amazon.ca as non-compliant and subject to recall because it lacked the mandatory ALCI plug, calling it “a safety risk.” Only 27 reviews in our dataset raised compliance at all — which is exactly why it is worth checking yourself.
How to check in 10 seconds: look at the plug end of the cord. A compliant North American hair dryer has a rectangular GFCI-style box on the plug, usually with a test/reset button. If your plug is a plain two-prong or three-prong with no box, that is a red flag.
Practical safety guidance:
- Check for the ALCI plug box the moment the box arrives
- Never run a dryer on high heat with the rear intake blocked or a filter clogged — that is the overheating path reviewers describe
- If you smell burning, stop using it immediately. In our data, burning smell preceded failure in the overwhelming majority of cases
- Let the unit cool before storing. Multiple reviewers noted the body staying hot enough to be a hazard in a drawer
Which Dyson alternative should you buy?
For most people, the Laifen Air at about C$100. It is the best balance in this category — real high-speed technology, a 4.5★ rating, a brand-controlled Canadian listing, and about 75% less than a Supersonic.
If your hair is thick or long: the Laifen SE2 (about C$145). Our data says underpowered dryers are the number one reason people return hair dryers. If you have dense hair, do not buy the cheapest option — you will be the person writing the one-star review about airflow.
If you want the best-rated premium build: the Dreame (about C$160). 4.6★, the highest in our premium tier — though on the smallest Canadian sales volume here.
If C$100 is not happening right now: the Slopehill (about C$43). 22,195 ratings is a real signal, and it is the safest budget bet by volume. But go in knowing the under-C$50 band had a 30.3% complaint rate, and that its warranty runs through a third-party seller.
If you want lightweight and cheap: the Wavytalk (about C$40). Most-reviewed dryer on the list, diffuser included, same budget-band durability caveat.
Do not buy: the Laifen Swift (gen 1). It is a different model from the Air and SE2, it carries only a 4.1★ rating, and its sales are declining. We excluded it deliberately.
Buying Dyson alternatives in Canada: where to get them and what to verify
All five models are sold on Amazon.ca, and that is where our price, rating and sales data comes from. Fastest shipping, easiest returns.
Where these are sold
- Amazon.ca — all five models. Also where our review and sales data comes from
- Brand storefronts — Laifen and Dreame sell via brand-operated Amazon storefronts. Slopehill’s listings are held by third-party sellers
- Costco / Best Buy / Walmart Canada — carry Conair, Revlon and Remington rather than the high-speed brands. See where to buy hair dryers in Canada
Five things to verify before you click buy (we have not verified these for every variant — check them yourself)
- The ALCI plug — rectangular box on the plug end. Non-negotiable
- Warranty length and who honours it — a brand warranty beats a reseller warranty
- Whether the Buy Box seller is the brand — look for “Sold by Laifen Official” or “Dreame Technology”
- Voltage — if you will travel, confirm dual voltage 110–220V. See our travel hair dryer guide
- Price history — these models go on sale regularly. Compare against our Canada deals page
A note on price and duty. Several Canadian reviewers noted US pricing being lower. Importing directly from a US retailer can add duty and brokerage; buying from Amazon.ca avoids that, and returns are far simpler.
Dyson hair dryer alternatives: frequently asked questions
Are Dyson hair dryer dupes actually any good? Some are. The gap is not power — it is durability. Across 8,261 Canadian reviews we analysed, the median reported failure was 5.5 months, and dryers over C$120 had a 9.6% complaint rate versus 30.3% under C$50. The dupes worth buying are the ones with a real warranty and a brand-operated listing.
How long do these Dyson alternatives actually last? Longer than the worst reviews suggest, shorter than the marketing implies. Of the reviews naming a specific failure time, the median was 5.5 months and the mean 6.0 months. Only 0.8% failed out of the box — almost all failures happen after weeks of use, which is why warranty coverage matters more than the spec sheet.
What is the most common way a hair dryer fails? Complete stoppage (601 mentions), then cord and connector failure (417), switch failure (300) and motor degradation (196). Cord failure at the handle junction is the one to inspect on arrival — several reviewers reported sparking there.
Does a Dyson alternative work on 220V for travel? Most do not. Only dual-voltage models can switch, and voltage was the most-discussed topic in our entire dataset (785 mentions). Confirm “dual voltage 110–220V” is printed on the handle or box before buying for travel.
Do these dryers have the ALCI safety plug required in Canada? Almost no buying guide covers this. ALCI plugs provide shock protection, and one Canadian reviewer flagged a dryer on Amazon.ca as non-compliant and recalled for missing one. Check the plug end for a rectangular GFCI-style box with test and reset buttons.
Is Laifen a real Dyson alternative or just a copy? It is a genuine brushless high-speed dryer at roughly a quarter of the Supersonic price, sold through a single brand-operated Canadian storefront. Its weakness is service history — the brand is young, so long-term reliability is not yet proven the way legacy brands are.
Why do you rank these dryers on durability instead of airflow? Because the data says so. Across 8,261 Canadian reviews, durability was the most negative topic in the category — 946 negative mentions and an 84% negative share — higher negativity than noise, weight, price or performance. Ranking on airflow while ignoring a median 5.5-month failure rate would be recommending dryers that quit.
Our verdict on Dyson hair dryer alternatives
The Dyson Supersonic is a genuinely excellent dryer, and if the price is not a barrier, buy it. But the reason to look at alternatives is not that Dyson is bad — it is that the alternatives have closed the technology gap while the price gap has stayed wide.
What has not closed is the reliability gap, and that is where our analysis earns its keep. Dryers over C$120 in our dataset had a 9.6% complaint rate against 30.3% for those under C$50. So the useful advice is not “buy the cheapest dupe.” It is:
Buy the Laifen Air at about C$100, confirm the ALCI plug on arrival, register the warranty, and keep the receipt.
