Dyson Hair Dryer Review

Dyson is the reliability benchmark, but both Canadian models rate below cheaper competitors — 4.4★ and 4.5★ against 4.6★ for a Laifen and a Dreame. What the premium buys is a service network, not a higher rating.

The headline finding is not the one most guides report. In our dataset of 8,261 Canadian reviews and the Amazon.ca top 50, neither Dyson model has the highest rating — the Supersonic Travel sits at 4.4★ from 310 ratings and the Supersonic Nural at 4.5★ from 125, while the Laifen Air Diffuser and Dreame Pocket Pro both reach 4.6★ at a quarter of the price Amazon.ca data.

What Dyson does lead on is real, though: a Canadian service network, a decade of product history, and universal voltage on the Travel model. Dyson holds only about 1.2% of unit sales in Canada but roughly 11.5% of revenue — it sells few dryers at a very high price Amazon.ca data. Whether that is worth 4× to 6.3× a Laifen is the only question that matters, and this page answers it honestly rather than assuming the premium is self-justifying.

Dyson hair dryer models compared

Dyson sells two hair dryers we track in Canada: the Supersonic Travel and the Supersonic Nural, C$230 apart.

What we checked for both:

  • CAD price and current Amazon.ca rating with rating count
  • Estimated monthly unit sales and how long each listing has been live
  • Category BSR and whether Dyson operates the listing
  • Who holds the Buy Box, because it determines who honours a warranty claim
  • Voltage, since universal voltage is one of the few hard functional differences in this category

How to read the labels in this guide. Review analysis means a pattern across all 8,261 Canadian reviews in our dataset. Amazon.ca data is verifiable by you today. Buyer feedback is a single quoted experience. Manufacturer claim is unverified.

One honest caveat. Our review sample averages 3.37 stars while these products display 4.4–4.5 stars on Amazon.ca, because the export skews toward recent and critical reviews. We use it for theme and pain-point analysis only, never as a substitute for a product’s displayed rating.

1. Dyson Supersonic Travel — the better value of the two

about C$400 · 4.4★ (310 ratings) · about 234 units/month · BSR #34 · 6.5 months on sale · Buy Box: Dyson

What we liked

  • Universal voltage, stated plainly by Dyson rather than left for you to infer — the one hard functional advantage in this range Manufacturer claim
  • 310 Canadian ratings — the largest Dyson review base we track Amazon.ca data
  • Brand-operated listing with a single seller and no competing resellers. Warranty complaints are the second-largest cluster in our data at 81% negative, and this listing avoids the reseller problem entirely (Amazon.ca data, review analysis)
  • Designed as the lighter, more compact Supersonic variant, which matters over long sessions Manufacturer claim

What we didn’t

  • 4.4★ is below the Laifen Air Diffuser and Dreame Pocket Pro at 4.6★, both of which cost far less Amazon.ca data
  • At C$400 it is 4× the Laifen Air for a rating 0.1 lower Amazon.ca data
  • 6.5 months on sale is a short Canadian track record for a product family this established Amazon.ca data
  • We have not measured airflow, noise or dry time on it (our test protocol)

Skip if: you want the highest rating for the money — that is not what you are buying here.

2. Dyson Supersonic Nural — the most advanced heat control

about C$630 · 4.5★ (125 ratings) · about 182 units/month · BSR #36 · 12.4 months on sale · Buy Box: Dyson

What we liked

  • Heat sensing that adjusts to distance from the head — the most advanced heat control available in this category, and the most relevant feature for fine, damaged or colour-treated hair Manufacturer claim
  • 4.5★ — the higher rating of the two Dyson models Amazon.ca data
  • Brand-operated listing, single seller Amazon.ca data
  • The longest product-family track record in the category Amazon.ca data

What we didn’t

  • about C$630 — the most expensive hair dryer in our entire Canadian dataset, at 6.3× the Laifen Air Amazon.ca data
  • Only 125 Canadian ratings, the smallest sample of any model we cover above C$120 Amazon.ca data
  • 4.5★ still does not beat a Laifen Air Diffuser at about C$100 at 4.6★ Amazon.ca data
  • Attachments vary by variant, so verify before buying Amazon.ca data

Skip if: price is a genuine constraint. Heat sensing is a real feature, but the data does not support it producing a proportional satisfaction gain.

Is the Dyson hair dryer worth it?

This is the question every Dyson page dodges, so here is our actual position.

What the C$300 to C$530 premium over a Laifen buys you:

You getWhy it matters
A Canadian service networkNo other brand in this comparison has one. When a dryer fails at month seven, this is the difference between a process and a dead end
A decade of product historyThe Supersonic family predates every competitor here. Longevity is not a specification, but it is evidence
Universal voltage on the TravelA genuine functional difference, not a marketing one
Heat sensing on the NuralThe most sophisticated heat control available, relevant if your hair is fine or damaged
A brand-operated listingOne seller, one warranty counterparty — though Laifen, Dreame, wavytalk and Aina also do this

What it does not buy you:

  • A higher rating. Both Dyson models rate below a Laifen Air Diffuser and a Dreame Pocket Pro Amazon.ca data
  • More airflow than the data supports. Dyson describes the same high-airflow, lower-heat approach every premium competitor describes Manufacturer claim
  • Reliability evidence specific to these two SKUs. The Travel has been on sale 6.5 months and the Nural 12.4 — anyone claiming long-term reliability data for either is guessing Amazon.ca data

Our honest read. If a failure at month seven would be a serious problem for you, or if you travel internationally, the premium buys something concrete and the answer is yes. If you are comparing purely on drying experience per dollar, the answer is no — and our data explains why: the over-C$120 price band has a 9.6% complaint rate, and every model on this page sits inside that band Review analysis. The band is what predicts reliability, and Laifen and Dreame are in it too.

What Dyson’s Canadian position actually looks like:

Revenue share (top 50)~11.5%—
Units/month (both models)416slopehill 1902 alone: 8,660
Average selling priceabout C$510Category median about C$49

Read that table carefully. Dyson sells roughly 416 units a month in Canada against slopehill’s 8,660 for one model. It is a boutique position at the top of the market, not a volume one — and that is a legitimate strategy, not a weakness. It simply means Dyson is not the default choice in this country, and the premium has to justify itself per buyer.

Three things to verify before buying either Dyson:

  1. The ALCI plug — a rectangular GFCI-style box on the plug end. One Canadian reviewer flagged a dryer sold on Amazon.ca as non-compliant and recalled for missing it
  2. The exact voltage range on the Travel before relying on it abroad — models get revised
  3. Whether the variant includes a diffuser. Attachments vary across Supersonic variants, and our data shows attachment security running at 186 mentions and 57% negative. See our diffuser guide for what to check

Dyson hair dryer FAQ

Is the Dyson hair dryer worth the price? Only if you value what the premium actually buys: a Canadian service network, a decade of product history, and universal voltage on the Travel model. On rating alone it does not win — both Dyson models rate below a Laifen and a Dreame that cost a quarter as much.

Why does Dyson rate lower than cheaper hair dryers? We cannot fully explain it, and we will not guess. What we can report is the data: Supersonic Travel is 4.4 stars from 310 Canadian ratings and the Nural is 4.5 from 125, while the Laifen Air Diffuser and Dreame Pocket Pro both sit at 4.6. Price and satisfaction are not the same axis.

What is the difference between Dyson Supersonic Travel and Nural? The Travel at about C$400 is the lighter, more compact variant with universal voltage for international use. The Nural at about C$630 adds heat sensing that adjusts to distance from the head, which is the more conservative option for fine or damaged hair. The Nural is C$230 more.

Does the Dyson Supersonic work in Europe? The Supersonic Travel does, using universal voltage, so you need only a plug adapter. Confirm the exact range on the listing before you travel, because models are revised. Voltage was the single most-discussed topic in our entire dataset at 785 mentions.

Is Dyson sold by the brand in Canada? Yes. Both Dyson models we track have the Buy Box held by Dyson itself, with a single seller and no competing resellers. That is the cleanest warranty structure in our dataset alongside Laifen, Dreame, wavytalk and Aina.

How much of the Canadian market does Dyson have? About 1.2% of unit sales in the Amazon.ca top 50, but around 11.5% of revenue. Dyson sells few dryers at a very high price, which is a completely different position from slopehill, which holds about 30% of units at about C$43.

Our verdict on Dyson hair dryers

Buy the Dyson Supersonic Travel at about C$400 if you travel internationally or want a Canadian service network behind the warranty. It is the better value of the two Dyson models, has the larger review base at 310 ratings, and universal voltage is a real functional advantage rather than a marketing one.

Buy the Dyson Supersonic Nural at about C$630 only if heat sensing is worth C$230 to you. It is the most advanced heat control in the category and the right choice for fine, damaged or colour-treated hair — but at 6.3× a Laifen Air, and with the smallest review sample of any premium model we cover, it is a considered purchase rather than an obvious one.

Do not buy Dyson expecting the highest rating. It does not have it. The Laifen Air Diffuser and Dreame Pocket Pro both sit at 4.6★ against Dyson’s 4.4★ and 4.5★. What Dyson has is the service network, the track record and the travel voltage — and those are the reasons to pay, if you pay.
