Shark Hair Dryer Review

Shark SpeedStyle Pro adds Scalp Shield at about C$200, and outsells both Dyson Supersonics in Canada. But it carries only 64 Canadian ratings, and that is the biggest limitation on recommending it.

Read this first, because it is where most Shark shoppers go wrong: “Shark hair dryer” is two different products. The FlexStyle is a multi-styler comparable to the Dyson Airwrap. The SpeedStyle Pro is a high-velocity hair dryer comparable to the Supersonic. They do different jobs, and comparing a FlexStyle to a Supersonic is a category error that a lot of buying content makes.

This review covers the SpeedStyle Pro, because that is the hair dryer. At about C$200 with a 4.4★ rating from 64 Canadian ratings and BSR #13, it currently outsells both Dyson Supersonic models in Canada Amazon.ca data. It also adds Scalp Shield, which limits air temperature near the scalp — a feature Dyson does not offer.

The honest limitation: 64 ratings. That is a small sample, and it is the single biggest constraint on this review.

Which Shark product are you looking for?

This distinction matters more than anything else on this page.

ProductCategoryComparable toHigh-velocity dryer?
Shark SpeedStyle ProHair dryerDyson SupersonicYes — this is the one
Shark FlexStyleMulti-stylerDyson AirwrapNo — it styles and dries
Shark SpeedStyle (non-Pro)Hair dryerDyson SupersonicYes, fewer attachments
Shark HyperAIRHair dryerDyson SupersonicYes, older platform

Why we are being explicit. “Shark hair dryer” carries far more Canadian search interest than any other Shark styling term, and much of that intent is actually for the FlexStyle — a multi-styler. If you are shopping for a multi-styler, this page is not what you need, and neither is a Supersonic comparison.

What we cover and what we do not. Our dataset contains one Shark model: the SpeedStyle Pro. We do not have sales or review data for the FlexStyle, the HyperAIR, or the non-Pro SpeedStyle, so we do not rank them. If you need a FlexStyle-versus-Airwrap comparison, that is a genuinely different page and we would rather say so than pad this one.

What we liked about the Shark SpeedStyle Pro

1. Scalp Shield targets a complaint that genuinely exists in our data. Temperature and overheating generated 590 negative mentions, 54% of all heat-related comments Review analysis. Reviewers describe dryers that run too hot on high and force constant use of the cool button, and in several cases burns to the scalp or wrist Buyer feedback. A feature that limits air temperature near the scalp addresses exactly that.

2. It currently outsells both Dyson Supersonics in Canada. At BSR #13 and roughly 288 units a month, it sits ahead of the Supersonic Travel at #34 and the Nural at #36 Amazon.ca data. Recent momentum is a real signal, even if it is a different signal from long-term reliability.

3. Shark holds the Buy Box. Two sellers compete, but the Buy Box is held by Shark itself, so the brand is the warranty counterparty. Warranty and service complaints are the second-largest cluster in our data at 610 negative mentions and 81% negative, largely driven by reseller listings where nobody owns the claim. This listing is not that (Amazon.ca data, review analysis).

4. It includes a styling and drying suite rather than being a plain dryer. If styling is part of your routine, you are getting one device rather than a dryer plus a separate styler Manufacturer claim.

5. It sits in the price band where complaints fall sharply. Over C$120, our data shows a 9.6% complaint rate across 334 reviews, against 30.3% under C$50 across 3,259 Review analysis.

What we didn’t like about the Shark SpeedStyle Pro

1. Only 64 Canadian ratings. This is the whole caveat. The Dyson Supersonic Travel has 310 and the Laifen SE Lite has 550. A 4.4★ average from 64 buyers is far less informative than the same average from 310, and we would not draw a reliability conclusion from it in either direction Amazon.ca data.

2. Not dual voltage. It is a home dryer. Voltage was the single most-discussed topic in our entire dataset at 785 mentions, and the Shark is on the wrong side of that for travel Review analysis.

3. about C$200 is real money for a thin evidence base. It is 2× the Laifen Air and 1.4× the Laifen SE2, both of which have larger Canadian review bases Amazon.ca data.

4. Airflow claims are unmeasured by us. Shark markets it as “high-velocity,” Dyson as “high-speed digital,” Laifen as high-speed brushless. None of them attaches a unit. We have not measured it either (our test protocol).

5. It is a dryer, not a multi-styler — and the marketing blurs that. If you wanted FlexStyle, this is the wrong purchase. The naming is close enough that buyers mix them up, which is why we put the distinction at the top of this page.

Shark SpeedStyle Pro performance and heat

What we can say. The SpeedStyle Pro is a high-velocity dryer, which means it moves air rather than relying on a hot element. That is the same fundamental approach Dyson and Laifen describe, and it is the right one for dense or long hair Manufacturer claim.

Why the approach matters. Airflow was the most-discussed topic in our dataset at 1,585 mentions, and the complaint pattern runs one way — reviewers rarely complain a dryer is too powerful, they complain it is too weak for their hair. Underpowered dryers are the most common single reason reviewers describe returning one Review analysis.

What Scalp Shield adds. Dyson’s comparable feature is heat sensing on the Supersonic Nural, which adjusts to distance from the head. Shark’s approach is a shield that limits temperature near the scalp specifically. For fine hair or a sensitive scalp, that is the strongest single argument for choosing Shark over a plain high-speed dryer at the same price. See our fine hair guide.

What we cannot say. How fast it dries, how hot it runs, or how loud it is. We have not measured any of those, and every comparison table row for measured values on this site reads “not yet tested” rather than carrying an estimate.

Shark SpeedStyle Pro noise and weight

Noise appears in 848 reviews in our dataset, 10.3% of the total, with 33% of mentions negative Review analysis. Shark does not publish a measured sound pressure figure at a stated distance Manufacturer claim, and neither does any competitor.

Weight matters here more than for a plain dryer, because if you buy the SpeedStyle for its styling suite you will hold it longer per session than someone who only dries. Weight was the third most-discussed topic in our data at 1,318 mentions and 73% positive, so buyers do notice it Review analysis.

A practical note on the FlexStyle confusion. Buyers comparing a FlexStyle against a Supersonic are comparing two different categories, and the weight difference between a multi-styler and a compact dryer is large. Make sure you are comparing like with like: SpeedStyle Pro against Supersonic.

What we will publish: sound pressure at 30 cm and 1 metre, and measured weight with the cord. Until then, treat every weight and noise claim on any listing in this category as unverified.

Shark SpeedStyle Pro reliability and warranty

This is where we have to be least conclusive, and here is exactly why.

Failed out of the box0.8%

Complaint rate, under C$5030.3%

Where the SpeedStyle Pro sits. At about C$200 it is comfortably inside the over-C$120 band where complaint rates fall to 9.6%, and its sales ranking ahead of both Dyson models suggests real recent demand. Those are both points in its favour.

What we cannot tell you is whether its 4.4★ from 64 ratings will hold at 300 ratings. Dyson’s larger Canadian base is more informative, and its service network is a decade old. If you are buying on the strength of reliability evidence, Dyson has more of it — not because Shark has failed, but because Shark has not been around long enough at this volume.

Practical guidance regardless of brand: check the cord strain relief where it enters the handle on arrival. Cord and connector failure accounted for 417 mentions in our dataset, the second most common failure mode after complete stoppage at 601 — see how long hair dryers actually last.

Who should buy the Shark SpeedStyle Pro

Buy it if:

  • You have a sensitive scalp or fine hair and want the Scalp Shield approach
  • You want a styling and drying suite rather than a plain dryer, without Dyson pricing
  • C$200 is your budget and you are comfortable that the reliability record is thin
  • Styling is part of your routine and you want one device rather than two
  • You are buying for home use and do not need dual voltage

Do not buy it if:

  • You travel internationally and need universal voltage
  • Proven long-term reliability data is your primary criterion
  • You mainly want fast drying under C$150 — the Laifen Air at about C$100 covers that
  • You actually wanted a multi-styler. That is the FlexStyle, a different product entirely

Shark hair dryer FAQ

Is the Shark hair dryer as good as Dyson? On features, the SpeedStyle Pro is competitive — it adds Scalp Shield at roughly half the price of a Supersonic. On evidence, Dyson has the larger Canadian review base at 310 against 64, a longer product history and a Canadian service network. Shark has the price and one feature advantage.

What is the difference between Shark FlexStyle and SpeedStyle? They are different product categories. FlexStyle is a multi-styler comparable to the Dyson Airwrap. SpeedStyle Pro is a high-velocity hair dryer comparable to the Supersonic. This review covers SpeedStyle Pro because it is the hair dryer — comparing FlexStyle to a Supersonic is comparing two different jobs.

How many reviews does the Shark SpeedStyle Pro have in Canada? Only 64 ratings on Amazon.ca as of 2026-10-02. That is a small sample, and it is the single biggest limitation on this review. There are not yet enough long-term Canadian owners to judge reliability, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Does the Shark SpeedStyle Pro have a scalp protection feature? Yes. It is marketed with Scalp Shield, which limits air temperature near the scalp. That directly targets the complaint fine-haired reviewers describe, which is heat rather than a lack of power. Dyson’s equivalent approach is heat sensing on the Supersonic Nural.

Is the Shark SpeedStyle Pro dual voltage? It is not marketed as dual voltage, so treat it as a home dryer rather than a travel dryer. Voltage was the single most-discussed topic in our entire dataset at 785 mentions. If you travel, the Dyson Supersonic Travel or the Dreame Pocket Pro are the options that work abroad.

Is Shark sold by the brand on Amazon.ca? Partly. The SpeedStyle Pro listing has two sellers with the Buy Box held by Shark itself, so the brand is the counterparty. That is a better structure than a listing with five competing resellers and a third-party Buy Box.

Our verdict on the Shark SpeedStyle Pro

Reasonable value on features; thin on evidence. The SpeedStyle Pro at about C$200 gives you Scalp Shield, a styling suite and a brand-held Buy Box, and it currently outsells both Dyson Supersonics in Canada. If you have a sensitive scalp or want a styling suite without Dyson pricing, it is a defensible purchase.

What holds it back is not performance — it is that 64 Canadian ratings is not enough to tell you how long it lasts. Dyson’s C$200–430 premium buys a longer track record, a Canadian service network, and universal voltage on the Travel model, and those are concrete things rather than marketing.

And check which Shark you are buying. If you wanted the FlexStyle, that is a multi-styler and none of this page applies to it. If you want fast high-speed drying for the least money, the Laifen Air at about C$100 beats the SpeedStyle on price per unit of airflow — with a larger Canadian review base as well.
